A cross-sectional study, which focused on children with short stature, was implemented at the Department of Chemical Pathology and Endocrinology, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Rawalpindi, Pakistan, during the period from August 2020 to July 2021. A complete patient history and physical examination, baseline lab tests, skeletal age X-rays, and karyotyping were part of the established evaluation protocol. Growth hormone stimulation tests were utilized to assess growth hormone status, while the levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 and insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-3 in serum were also measured. The data was analyzed employing the statistical software SPSS, version 25.
Among the 649 children observed, 422, representing 65.9% of the total, identified as boys, and 227, comprising 34.1%, identified as girls. A median age of 11 years was observed for the entire sample, characterized by an interquartile range of 11 years. Of the total number of children, 116 (179 percent) exhibited a growth hormone deficiency. In this study, familial short stature was documented in 130 (20%) children, and constitutional delay in growth and puberty in 104 (161%). A comparison of serum insulin-like growth factor-1 and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 levels in children with growth hormone deficiency and children with other causes of short stature revealed no statistically significant difference (p>0.05).
The findings from the population survey showed physiological short stature to be more widespread than growth hormone deficiency. Employing serum insulin-like growth factor-1 and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 levels in isolation is inadequate for screening children with short stature for growth hormone deficiency.
The population exhibited a greater incidence of physiological short stature cases, subsequent to cases of growth hormone deficiency. Sole reliance on serum insulin-like growth factor-1 and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 levels is not an appropriate method for identifying growth hormone deficiency in children presenting with short stature.

The Ear-Nose-Throat and Radiology departments of a public hospital in Karachi served as the setting for a cross-sectional, descriptive study of subjects aged 10 to 51 years, of either gender, and possessing intact ear ossicles, conducted between January 20 and July 23, 2021. This research seeks to understand the influence of hepcidin and ferritin on the onset and prognosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus in subjects who are using only metformin or a combination of anti-diabetic medications.
The Department of Physiology, Baqai Medical University, Karachi, conducted an observational case-control study between August 2019 and October 2020. Participants, comprising individuals from both genders, were divided into equal groups: non-diabetic controls, newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus patients not receiving treatment, type 2 diabetes mellitus patients solely taking metformin, type 2 diabetes mellitus patients using both metformin and oral hypoglycemics, type 2 diabetes mellitus patients on insulin alone, and type 2 diabetes mellitus patients using both insulin and oral hypoglycemics. For determining fasting plasma glucose, the glucose oxidase-peroxidase method was used. Glycated hemoglobin was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. High-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein were ascertained using direct methods. Cholesterol levels were determined by a cholesterol oxidase-phenol-4-aminoantipyrine-peroxidase method, and triglyceride levels were quantified using the glycerol phosphate oxidase-phenol-4-aminoantipyrine-peroxidase method. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays were employed to assess serum ferritin, insulin, and hepcidin levels. Insulin resistance evaluation was conducted using the homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance. The collected data was analyzed using the statistical software SPSS 21.
Out of the 300 subjects, a consistent group of 50 (1666 percent) was observed in each of the six divisions. From the study group, 144 (48%) participants identified as male, while 155 (5166%) identified as female. The mean age in the control group was statistically lower than that found in each of the diabetic groups (p<0.005), a finding consistent across all other parameters (p<0.005), though not for high-density lipoprotein (p>0.005). Moreover, a statistically significant increase in hepcidin levels was observed in the control group (p<0.005). Subjects newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) presented with significantly elevated ferritin levels in comparison to control subjects (p<0.005). Conversely, all other groups experienced a decrease in ferritin levels, which was also statistically significant (p<0.005). Among diabetics receiving only metformin, hepcidin levels showed an inverse relationship with glycated haemoglobin, a correlation significant at p = 0.005 (r = -0.27).
The efficacy of anti-diabetes drugs in managing type 2 diabetes mellitus was coupled with a decrease in ferritin and hepcidin levels, substances that have been identified as contributing factors in the development of diabetes.
Anti-diabetes drugs, beyond their primary function in treating type 2 diabetes mellitus, also decreased the concentration of ferritin and hepcidin, which have a critical role in the progression of diabetes.

At the Pakistan Navy Station Shifa Hospital in Karachi, a comparative, analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted between the months of January 2021 and July 2021. To quantify radiological parameters, posterior-anterior chest X-rays were employed, while 2-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography was used to quantify echocardiographic parameters. A binary analysis of cardiomegaly, either present or absent in both imaging procedures, was performed. Using SPSS 23, a data analysis was carried out.
In a sample of 79 participants, 44 (557%) were male and 35 (443%) were female. The average age within the sample group reached 52,711,454 years. In a study of chest X-rays, 28 (3544%) cases presented with enlarged hearts, and echocardiograms indicated 46 (5822%) such cases. X-rays of the chest displayed sensitivity and specificity values of 54.35% and 90.90%, respectively. The positive and negative predictive values were calculated as 8928% and 5882%, respectively. In terms of identifying an enlarged heart, chest X-rays displayed a remarkable accuracy of 6962%.
